Thanks to Nancy Barron & Associates, in 2009 we kicked the bottled water habit.
Instead of handing out hundreds of bottles of water to our artists and volunteers, we purchased BPA-free sports bottles and refilled them from coolers. This effort keeps plastic bottles out of our landfill and saves the petroleum and energy used to produce plastic bottles.
Five reasons to give up bottled water |

For years we wore our young people out, delivering bottled water to our artists and volunteers.
This had to stop!

Did you know that the lifecycle energy cost of a bottle of water is equivalent to filling up a quarter of each disposable bottle with oil? Why produce nearly a million tons of plastic to cart billions of gallons of water all over the country when clean, virtually free water flows right into our homes?

You can help break the plastic bag habit. The bags we use to cart groceries home are important for our wellbeing and that of the planet. Across the globe, plastic bags are distributed at a rate of one million a minute, yet these single-use carriers will hang around long afterwards, polluting our soil and waterways.
Two years ago Nancy Barron financed the purchase of our Art Totes, 100% cotton canvas shopping bags bearing our delightful Festival Artwork. The limited edition totes quickly sold out, but there are still a few signed, limited edition prints of our Festival artwork available! |
Spread the Word - Kick the Habit |
Plastic bags are made of polyethylene - more commonly known as polythene - they are hazardous to manufacture and are said to take up to 1,000 years to decompose.
The production of plastic bags requires petroleum and often natural gas, both non-renewable resources that increase our dependency on foreign suppliers. Additionally, prospecting and drilling for these resources contributes to the destruction of fragile habitats and ecosystems around the world.

Francisco's Farm has always been a 'Litter Free' event, thanks to our conscientious exhibitors and volunteers.
"Last year I walked the entire campus after the Festival, picking up all the trash left by our artists and visitors,"
says Event Coordinator, Marcie Christensen."All the trash fit in one hand."

Bluegrass PRIDE (promoting Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment) has helped us with our Community Art Projects and educated us all in ways we can reduce our impact on the earth. We're working to make our 2010 Festival a Zero-Waste event by rethinking, recycling, repurposing, and composting.

Aspiring Artists of All Ages helped us turn Rain Barrels into Public Art in 2009. The completed barrels will be used to water our Community Garden at Midway Presbyterian Church (at the corner of South Turner and Bruen Streets). |
