Artist Profile ~ Shane Caswell
magic in glass

Issue No. 37

Creating borosilicate marbles and paperweights using the torchwork method, Shane represents one of a growing number of craftspeople breaking new ground with glass that has traditionally been associated with scientific uses. He is inspired as an artist to see a glass medium evolving into an art form that is noticed and appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Combining clear and colored glass rods, Shane creates his artwork in the flame of a torch at approximately 2000 degrees. The colored rods are made by mixing various metal oxides with clear glass. In some applications, dichroic is utilized. Dichroic glass is a flat sheet (similar to a record album) of chemically coated glass using layers of metal oxides to reflect various colors. After these elements are combined in the flame and while still hot, the marble is formed in a semi-circular graphite mold to create a perfectly round sphere. Then the sphere then goes into a kiln and is annealed at 1050 degrees.
Shane's work is showcased in the American Museum of Glass at Wheaton Village, New Jersey and the Studio at Corning, New York as well as in galleries and private collections.
He is also featured in the publication, "Contemporary Marbles and Related Art Glass" and "The Encyclopedia of Modern Marbles, Spheres, and Orbs". Shane appeared on Home and Garden TV on the Ultimate Collector show featuring marble art.
His awards include Best in Craft at the 2005 Mystic Outdoor Art Show (CT), First in 3Dat the 2008 Art on the Square (LaGrange, KY) and Best in Glassat the 2009 Talbot Street Art Fair in Indianapolis. His work is shown and can be enjoyed at many fine art and craft shows around the country, including Francisco's Farm Arts Festival.
Shane works independently in a studio nestled in the hills of southern Indiana.

Shane says, "I enjoy creating spheres because of their simple perfection as a form true to the universe we live in - the Earth we inhabit is a big blue marble and the sun and the moon are floating orbs in space."
We're delighted to welcome Shane back to the Festival and know you'll enjoy seeing his enchanting glass art up close.
