Artist Profile ~ Maria Pfropper
an American Folk Artist

Issue No. 40

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. One look at a whimsical image created by artist Maria Pfropper of Dryden, Michigan, confirms this adage. No matter the subject - animals disembarking from the ark or a cat in the garden - each image tells an engaging story in Maria's festive, early American folk art style.
Devoted to her family and her work, this self-taught artist paints full-time from her home studio in the Midwest. Her home rests amid ten acres of lush farm land, with plenty of trees and animals nearby to offer constant inspiration.

"I like to incorporate a magical or spiritual accent into my paintings," Maria says of her work. It is not uncommon for her to wake up during the night to jot down an idea for a future painting.
Folk Art is characterized by a style in which traditional rules of proportion and perspective are not employed. Maria's warm color palette gives her images an aged look, and her finely detailed acrylics convey the texture and appeal of heritage quilts.
The Chicago Public Library commissioned Maria to create an original painting for their exhibit, "Tall Man of Destiny: Images of Abraham Lincoln', which ran through February of this year. The library's curator had purchased some of her art at a show and later contacted her to participate in the tribute exhibition. Fashioned after an heirloom quilt, Maria's painting tells Lincoln's life story through a series of small vignettes, including the log cabin in Kentucky where he was born.

Many of her stories don't end at the edge of the canvas, but extend on to wrap their frames.
"To see a person look into my painting, get drawn in by the story, and walk away with a smile is a great motivation," says Maria.
Maria has won many Best in Show awards and First Place ribbons in shows from Massachusetts to Florida, and we're delighted she's returning to Midway. Come and meet her in person - you'll find her in Booth #89.
