Artist Profile ~ Joan Rasmussen
2009 Artist Award ~ First Place

Issue No. 30

Our 2009 Artist Award Jurors have preselected over two dozen artists to return in 2010.
We'll introduce you to one of them each week.

Meet Joan Rasmussen ~ Magical Realist

Joan first came to Francisco's Farm from Roswell, Georgia last year and her stunning artwork immediately captured our hearts. In addition to winning our First Place Award, she's garnered top honors at other fine arts festivals from New York to Florida.

An exhibiting member of Piedmont Craftsmen, Joan studied under Debra Fritts at Art Center West, and Deanna Sirlin at the Atlanta College of Art.

"All of Joan's work has the uncanny ability to capture your emotion with such great distinctive details," said Roswell Cultural Arts Board Chair Sharon Moskowitz upon commissioning Rasmussen to design the awards for their second annual CABY event.

mixed media art by Joan RasmussenIn Joan's words:

"As a native of New York City, one of my earliest realizations was that we are one of many. My approach to art and the figure incorporates this awareness.  With each new piece I draw upon a limitless resource of characters encountered.  Often, the end results are compilations of traits or features from persons with whom I've crossed paths; sometimes real, sometimes imagined, and sometimes I'm unsure.

I find unlimited inspiration from Devotional Art of Spanish American culture.  In particular, the articulated Santos doll continually triggers ideas for future work.
I am especially drawn to the craftsmen's term of Santero, which loosely translated means Saint Maker, and am fascinated by what the title implies.

Other sources of influence include:
  • Folk Art - if I could be locked in, overnight, at the Girard Wing of Santa Fe's Museum of International Folk Art, I'd be thrilled;
  • Magical Realism - when I first learned of this artistic genre, I knew I found an appropriate two word description for my work; and,
  • Dolls - historical, contemporary, paper, hand sewn, voodoo, sculpted, and all others.
Collecting, gathering, and repurposing is a favorite pastime  It was therefore natural and predetermined that I would incorporate found objects with my interpretation of the figure.

Completing each piece as an articulated doll simplifies the multi-layered human condition and draws upon the Santos doll inspiration.

'Albert' - mixed media figure by Joan RasmussenEach wears a piece of unexpected paraphernalia meant to accentuate how far we humans will go to be perceived as individuals--when in fact, I see it as us being one of many."

Joan is currently represented by the Newbill Collection in Seaside, Florida and Carolina Clay Gallery, St. John's Island, South Carolina.

Her upcoming shows include the Bluff Park Art Show in Birmingham and the Kentuck Festival in Northport, Alabama next month.

Opportunities closer to Kentucky include April exhibitions at The River Gallery in Chattanooga and Temple Art Festival in Nashville.

Meet more of Joan's wonderful characters on her "Sum of its Parts Studio" website, and come to Francisco's Farm next June to meet her in person.

Thanks for your support! Talk to you next week!
